Penny Power, founder of the Ecademy business network and author of Know Me, Like Me, Follow Me: What Online Social Networking Means for You and Your Business, explains how she sees the world of business development changing in the future:
A lot of people have been going through some challenges recently, financially. They're worried, and they're not sure about the future. I feel very differently. I think that I'm very, very excited about the fact that the world's changing. And I call it the world is rebooting, like a control-alt-delete on the hard disk of the world. And I think we're getting an opportunity here for us to reset ourselves and reset some of the core values that society needs.
I think it's a hidden desire inside people to say that perhaps greed and material goals, while it's important to feel successful and achieve certain levels of financial stability and independence and educate your children and have nice holidays and all these things, perhaps the world could be a little bit different if we're connected in a different way, if we support one other better. And ultimately, I think that these social networks, while they're for fun and for socializing and perhaps for building businesses and some people might see them as marketing channels or sales channels, however they want to see them ultimately, I think they're humanity networks. And I think the world is rebooting and is like a control-alt-delete at the same time that these networks are emerging and are becoming stronger and enabling humanity to be what it always could be, a great place for people to thrive together.
I see a lot of people focusing much more on what they're contributing to others; the way that they want to create their reputations. It's much more based on thinking about the other person than thinking about themselves first. It's not hard for people to do it, because the great thing about inside these social networks and social media sites is actually small amounts of support to other people take very little time, but they have a massive effect on the end result for people. And when you get into a world where everybody is starting to say, actually made that old world wasn't the right world, because it created a lot of anxiety, distrust, and fear.
Now we're in a new world, where it feels good. And I think a lot of people are happier. I see people providing better customer service. I think people seem happier. And maybe there's a slight feeling that world led by that material desire didn't actually bring the happiness that everybody wanted. I'm not saying that wealth is going to go, because I think that due to an increase in emotional wealth that will bring, I think, financial wealth will flow much stronger.
