Penny Power - networking expert, Ecademy founder, and author of Know Me, Like Me, Follow Me: What Online Social Networking Means for You and Your Business – shares business development advice on making the most of social networks:
I've created this sort of method around getting known, around being liked and about being followed.
Now social media gets you known, and it helps you create a very wide network strangers that are not going to to know you, trust you, like you, but they might know you, because they might see your YouTube video. They might see your blog that you write. But they don't know you well enough to say that they would advocate you or want to collaborate with you. But they know you exist, your brand. Very easy to achieve that in social media. Very low cost and very, very, very productive. But if you stay in just the know me world, people don't actually know how to trust you, so you're not necessarily going to build your business on that basis. You need to have conversations.
So you need to move from social media into social networks and start being liked, start having conversations. This is when you move from broadcast marketing to conversation marketing. And this is where the real power is, because this is when you get the viral effect of what you contribute and what you do for others. And then finally, when you start building a wide network and a deep network, you're going to begin to build some really deep friendships. And that's when you know who your true followers are, the people who are really advocating and wanting to work with you. And they might join the group you create or the social network you create on Ning. Or they might join a club that you create on Facebook or Ecademy or LinkedIn. That's when you really know who's getting deep with you and who you are really starting to talk to regularly. So that's about getting known, being liked and then creating a deep following.
