Social marketing and business expert Thomas Power explains why he expects Twitter to become the dominant online business development tool in the near future:

“What is Twitter, what's it going to be, where's it going? I think the thing about Twitter is I see Twitter like a coffee shop. And I see Google like a library. And you need both. You go to the library to get books and get information and look stuff up. And you go to the coffee shop to talk, to chat, to kick things around, to gossip, to hear what's going on. And I think when you define the news News is what people are talking about right now. What people are talking about right now is on Twitter, and arguably is Twitter. So Twitter is the new news, as well as being the news inside the news. So it's like the the new coffee shop and the talk that's going on inside the coffee shop.

“And you've got to understand, why do people want to share all that stuff? They want to have people respond to them. People want to be loved, they want to be cared for, and they see through Twitter that they can connect and manage their friends, their social life, their business friends. And they can broadcast through it, and they can answer through it. So it's a very powerful coffee shop.

“Now here's the thing. Once the coffee shop starts to get indexed, like the library, Google, then you can search the conversations of the world in real time. And with the hash tags you can search any subject in real time. And just read the conversations for every subject. Professional services, science. A network like BNI. Marketing, Microsoft, Google. Any subject in the world. Video. Music. And see what people are talking about right now.

“Here you've got the opportunity to find out in your particular industry, in your subject matter, in your area of expertise, everything that people are saying about your subject right now. Live and in real time. You can't do that on any other network. You can't do it on Google. You can't search for it on Google. You can't find it on Facebook. You can't find it on Ecademy. It's a new approach. And it's the perfect conversational marketing vehicle. Even though you can broadcast on it as well. And I think right now, people are just trying to understand, what is this coffee shop? And how do I use this coffee shop? Do I need to be in this coffee shop? But if we look at the speed of its growth, there's 30 million people on it now. They're expecting 100 million people to be on it by Christmas of 2009. So there could be 200 million people on it 2011. And there could be 400 million people on it in 2012. So it looks like it could get bigger than Facebook, and bigger than Google, and bigger than the two of them combined. And you can search it in real time. So it's really powerful. It's a very, very powerful medium. And of course we're unsure what it its. But it's got simple things it can do. You can find stuff out. You can talk to people you don't know. People reply to messages that you sent them when you answer a question. People you don't know. So it's open, it's random, and supportive.”
